Online Gambling and Betting in Greece
Greece, a country full of important history. The place where democracy was practiced for the first time and where major contributions have been made for the Western world as we know it nowadays. This turbulent history also applies to gambling in Greece. At first the Greek government was very much against online gambling and betting. When online casinos became popular around the millennium the Greeks were very fast to ban this form of gambling. The government banned iGaming by passing a law in 2002.
Nonetheless, in 2011 the Greek government started loosing up and passed a new law which essentially legalized online gambling. This lead to more than 20 licenses being granted to operators. However, this was of short lifespan. Just one year after the legalization the Greek minister monopolized the online gambling market for the state run operator OPAP. Following this the government warned the holders of these licenses to stop their services. This of course led to great criticism, especially considering EU law. Many industry professionals started expressing their concerns in regards to the monopoly in favor of OPAP.
Eventually, the Greek online gambling market opened up again in 2020 by ministerial decree. Currently, online gambling and betting is legalized and permitted only for operators that have been granted the necessary licenses and certifications by the Hellenic Gaming Commission. Now Betsson is the most recent operator that has been granted with online gambling and betting licenses within Greece.
